Three American Women Visit Northern Ireland

Reviewed November 6, 2023

Where do I begin? My head is still spinning with the wonderful week spent with Michael  Reaney. Michael was our personal driver/storyteller/historian for our week in Northern Ireland.  While we had some special requests, Michael always gave us some daily  Irish surprises which we were always willing to explore.

This was my second visit to the island this year. We had many drivers, but Michael was our favorite.  His attention to promptness and his clean vehicle was also appreciated. I would highly recommend Michael as your guide for your Irish expedition.

Hamilton/Harding

Michael was an excellent guide. We presented him with some last minute logistical problems and he solved them. He also made sure we got photos of ourselves at key locations and took the time to make sure the photos were good. Our transportation was comfortable and Michael provided water so we did not have to bring our own.

Excellent driver-guide for Connemara, the Burren, and the greater Galway area

Reviewed July 5, 2023

We engaged Michael as a tour guide driver for two day trips in June 2023, (Connemara and the Burren) for 4 of us, my wife and I with my parents (both in their 60s). We are from the US and were visiting Ireland for the first time. On the first morning, Michael picked us up in Audi Q7 that comfortably sat the 4 of us and was stocked plenty of supplementary materials for the trip ahead. He then spread out a map of the region and talked through the plan for the first day, indicating the ways in which we could change the itinerary as we went along, depending on how the day progressed.

Michael has a unique mix of qualities that make him an exceptional guide to the sights around counties Galway and Clare. On the one hand, he’s a native of Connemara and speaks Irish as his first language, so he’s truly a local who knows the area inside and out, and is able to talk in great detail on everything from historical uses of local plants to the evolution of local boat building practices. On the other, he has spent many years living abroad (Europe and Asia) and travelled extensively to more places than he could name (ask him!). Because of that, he intuitively knows how to structure a tour and communicate that knowledge to people with vastly different backgrounds and experiences. He was quickly able to suggest some modifications and added stops to the itinerary to fit what my parents were enjoying—a detour to a valley for better look at a local farm, a store specializing in Irish-style cold smoked salmon, a natural spring well off the side of the road used by bicyclists in the know. These added details, and the casualness with which we could alter our plans throughout the day, is what made the choice of a local driver-guide among the best travel decisions we’ve made. I strongly and unreservedly recommend Michael Reaney as an exceptional guide for anyone visiting the West of Ireland.

Galway City Tour

Reviewed February 25, 2023

We were lucky enough to be introduced to the beautiful city of Galway by Michael in the Summer of 2022 when we visited on a family holiday to Ireland.

A Galway native born and bred, Michael knows everything there is to know about the City and surrounding area! His personalised, highly engaging tour is infused with the strong passion and love he clearly has for his hometown.

He led us through the streets, bringing to life many stories of the people and history associated with the beautiful buildings as we went. Out particular favourites were learning about Claddagh rings and the James Lynch window.

Our family party ranged in age from over 80 to 11 years old and he accommodated for all of us in terms of interests and also physical requirements. Everyone was entranced by his stories, even our normally surly 16 year old was disappointed when the tour came to an end, and asked if we could stay longer!

Michael’s fun, interesting and engaging tours made Galway a highlight of our holiday - one that we will be talking about for many years to come. I strongly recommend. Thank you Michael.
