A Great Walking Tour With Sara

Reviewed July 8, 2023

We arranged a 3-hour tour of Bergamo with Sara on our way from Lake Como to Lake Garda.  Communication before the tour was excellent.  The tour was interesting and informative.  Sara is extremely knowlegeable about the history, architecture and art of the city and delivers her commentary in a very authentic, enthusiastic and entertaining (and easy to understand) manner.  We would certainly return to Bergamo again for a longer stay and definitely recommend Sara to others.

Bergamo tour

Reviewed February 19, 2019

We stayed in Milan and wanted to find a local guide in Bergamo for the tour next day. We were lucky that Sara responded that she is available for 10 am 3 hr cultural and historic tour of Bergamo. Our morning train from Milan was cancelled, and we had to take a train one hour later. We texted to Sara, and she responded that she will wait for us at the last bus stop in the historic upper city. First thing when we met she treated us with coffee and local sweets at the coffee shop near the bus stop; it was good to have it after chaotic morning rush with canceled train. Sara with her local routes was very passionate about her city, its history, architecture,  people and food. After walking through the narrow streets and piazzas of the upper city, ancient Roman roads she brought us to  the Basilica of St. Mary, the main historic treasure of Bergamo and she told us about its history, and religious and art treasures. Through narrow stairways she took us to the top of Basilica from where we had wonderful view and she showed from where from the city was bombarded by enemies during war times.  We went to Colleoni Chapel and she told us a story about this remarkable man. After walking to the upper city Venetian walls Sara took us to nice upper town restaurant, where we had a light Italian lunch for 12 euro/person. She directed us to the old Funicular which we took after lunch before going back to Milan. It was a wonderful day in the beautiful historic city and knowledgeable guide.

Bergamo, a hidden treasure revealed by the extraordinary talents of Ms. Sara Cologni

Reviewed May 5, 2014

After the hustle and bustle of Milan, a tour of the small towns outside of the City served as a welcome relief. Bergamo was just what the doctor ordered ! The air was clean and the streets were not congested. The old town was very inviting as there were many small streets rich with history. It was very easy to navigate the cobblestone streets filled with many shops and restaurants. However, you need a great guide to bring to life the rich history and culture of Bergamo. As a very experienced world traveler, I have met many tour guides, none as outstanding as the one we had in Bergamo. We were truly fortunate to have had the most professional, friendly and enthusiastic guide Ms. Sara Cologni lead our tour. First of all, she was truly excited about sharing with us so many new and interesting things about this wonderful medieval town. Bergamo became alive with her colorful and detailed descriptions. We were walking through history. She was very concerned with all members of the group and our safety. She reminded us to be careful when we were walking around the town. She adjusted the pace of the tour to accommodate the older members of our group. She was very patient and gladly answered all questioned posed by the group. She was a wealth of information. We saw so much and learned so much of the rich history of Bergamo. We visited the Chapel of Bergamo, the Bascilica of Santa Maria Maggiore (1137), Mausoleum of Bartollemeo Colleoni, Piazza Vecchia, Cathedral of St. Alessando and a few additional churches. Her knowledge of the town and its history was incredible. We had so much fun wandering around the historic town and had many opportunities to take photos. As we neared the end of our tour, we wanted to stay for another day thanks to the outstanding presentation of our exceptional tour guide. Without a doubt, Ms. Cologni was the BEST guide I have had in over 30 years of traveling. Visiting Bergamo is a MUST with Ms. Cologni. Bergamo is well worth spending at least a week visiting the wonderful medieval town as there is so much to see and do. It is a great place to relax and get away from the pushy and rude crowds found in Milan.
