Mostar

The best time to appreciate the charm of Mostar is in the evening, when the day-trippers and cruise visitors have departed, and the city returns to its state of calm ambience. The focal point of the town is its namesake, the Stari Most (Old Bridge), which spans the Neretva River in a graceful arch. Mostar did not survive the ravages of war unscathed; the Bridge was destroyed in the 1990s conflict, but was rebuilt under UNESCO patronage and reopened in 2004. Cross over to the picturesque Old Town, its cobbled streets and alleyways best explored by foot.  Here, one can find a colourful potpourri of shops selling interesting artifacts at the Old Bazaar in Kujundziluk, while the Koski ahmed Pasha Mosque nearby spans out stunning views of the city. Your Mostar tour guide will recommend a visit to the History Museum to find out more about Mostar’s eventful past, but to experience history at first hand, spend an evening at the Muslibegovica House, a symbol of Ottoman splendour. Further away from the city the natural splendour of the Kravica Falls awaits: ensure you visit in the summer months, since the stark winter puts the tourism industry in hibernation.
