A major transportation hub and stop on the so-called Reunification Express that heads North-South from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City, Vinh makes its mark between the mountains and the seas of Central Vietnam. It's a place with a hallowed history for many locals, laying claim to the village that gave the nation Ho Chi Minh himself –some 10 kilometres to the west of the city. On top of that, it's home to some intriguing German-Brutalist architectural pieces (a legacy of the Vietnam War) and a smattering of alluring outdoors attractions.
The oldest part of the center pops up with the ancient gates of the onetime Citadel opening up to handsome gabled roofs and age-stained bricks. They stand amid a cluster of concrete blocks that host museum collections dedicated to the Soviet programs of the 1930s and the cultures of the greater Nghe An province over the centuries. Vinh tour guides can also reveal a buzzing market bazaar, with craft goods, spicy noodle stalls and coffee vendors peppered about.
A break from the city in Vinh takes the form of a hop to either the beaches or the mountains. The coast is best at Cua Lo Beach, where seafood cantinas spill over onto a sliver of body-packed sand by the South China Sea. Hikers and adventurers are likely to prefer the Pu Mat National Park, where jungle-clad peaks rise through mists on the Laos border.
