Most travellers heading into Uganda by air typically pass through this leafy metropolis that juts its way out into the waters of the mighty Lake Victoria. But, while Entebbe is perhaps best known as the home of the country’s largest international airport, those who linger a little longer are bound to discover a wealth of natural gems.
For one, the city’s Wildlife Educational Center represents one of the best zoos in the region, offering glimpses of some of Africa’s rarest species, from the spotted leopard to the formidable pack lion. Then there’s the Entebbe Botanical Gardens, with its sprawling vines and jungle boughs, and the city’s cluster of Bavarian cafes and ad hoc farmer’s markets.
But, as any Entebbe tourist guide will tell you, this city’s real wealth comes from its location on the shores of Africa’s largest lake, and guests should be sure to explore the chimpanzee forests around Ngamba Island, along with the whole host of sandy beaches that pepper the riparian lands all around.
