Founded in 1928, An Taibhdhearc is Ireland's national Irish-language theatre. It has been home to a tradition of Irish-language plays and theatre productions for almost a century.

The word Taibhdhearc appears as a gloss for the Latin teatrum (theatre) in an old Irish document, derived from roots meaning 'dream' and 'glance.' The modern Irish word for a theatre is amharclann.
