Day 01

Reggio Calabria Through Archaeology, Seafront Legends and Heritage

  • 10.00 a.m. - Start the visit at the Archaeological Museum of Reggio Calabria, beginning on the ground floor with the Riace Bronzes.
  • Then move on to the Paleolithic floor for an excursion into human presence in the region.
  • At 11.30 a.m., begin the walk along the seafront, the most beautiful kilometre in Italy.
  • Hear about the place itself, the myths connected to it, the physical phenomenon of the Fata Morgana and its interpretation in antiquity, as well as the botanical species found here. At the end of the walk, admire the remains of the Greek walls.
  • At 12.30 p.m., head towards the Cathedral, including a visit to the interior and the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament. Learn about the celebrations held at different times of the year, with reference to devotion to the Madonna della Consolazione, also celebrated in Paternò.
  • At 1.15 p.m., enjoy a lunch break in Piazza Duomo, where there are seats for free use as well as numerous dining options.
  • Restaurants include 'Mamma Mia', which often hosts school groups and offers a 10 euro menu with a drink and pizza. You can choose from pizza margherita with sausage, potatoes, cooked ham, or plain. There is also a 15 euro menu consisting of a drink, appetizer, and pizza, or a drink, appetizer, and pasta. This must be confirmed a week before.
  • At 2.15 p.m., go up to see the Church of the Ottimati, an example of Byzantine art in Calabria, and view the Aragonese Castle from the outside. Then head back down towards Corso Garibaldi to see the Teatro Cilea and other Liberty-era buildings from the outside, continuing on to Via Giudecca.
  • At 2.45/3.00 p.m., meet Professor Simona Lanzoni, Coordinator of the Heritage Community 'Scalinata Monumentale di Via Giudecca', and meet some of the owners of the historic shops on this street, which was historically home to the Jewish community of Reggio Calabria.
  • Enjoy a food session at the local store 'Pietra Cappa'.
  • 4.00/4.30 p.m. - End of the tour.
