Itinerary
-
Discover the origin of Man's history
Morning:
7:00 AM - Breakfast & Departure
- Start your day with a filling breakfast at your accommodation in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area or a nearby lodge, many of which offer meals with views of the surrounding landscape. Set out early to make the most of the daylight for your explorations.
8:00 AM - Arrive at Olduvai Gorge Museum
- Arrive at the Olduvai Gorge Museum, a compact but well-organized facility showcasing exhibits on early human fossils and tools. It's recommended to have a guide to fully appreciate the historical context of the site.
8:30 AM - Museum Tour
- Begin your visit with a guided tour of the museum’s exhibits. The museum provides a deeper understanding of the excavations and findings made in the gorge, particularly by the renowned Leakey family.
- Zinjanthropus Site (Paranthropus boisei): Located at the northern end of the gorge, this site is famous for the discovery of Paranthropus boisei, an early hominid that lived about 1.8 million years ago. The fossil, found by Mary Leakey in 1959, is key in understanding the physical traits of early humans, such as a strong jaw and large teeth for grinding tough vegetation.
- Homo habilis Site (the "Handy Man"): Situated near the gorge’s southern end, this site is notable for the discovery of Homo habilis, one of the first species to use tools, dating back 2.3 to 1.6 million years. Here, you’ll find fossils of bones, hands, feet, and early stone tools, central to the Oldowan tool culture.
- Flaked Stone Tools Sites: Various locations in the gorge contain examples of stone tools used by early humans. Dating back over 2 million years, these tools include simple choppers and flakes used for cutting and processing food, offering a glimpse into early human ingenuity.
9:30 AM - Short Guided Tour of the Gorge
- After the museum, take a brief hike into the gorge with a guide.
- Although the gorge spans 30 miles (48 km), you will visit important excavation sites where fossils have been uncovered. Your guide will highlight the geological layers, explaining the site's importance in studying human evolution.
10:30 AM - Visit the Excavation Sites
- Explore the specific sites where the Leakeys and other archaeologists made their discoveries. Spend time at the famous Zinjanthropus site, reflect on its significance, and take photographs of this historical location.
Midday:
12:00 PM - Picnic Lunch
- Enjoy a relaxing picnic lunch at a designated spot near the gorge or return to a nearby lodge or campsite. Take time to unwind while soaking in the stunning views of the surrounding area.
1:00 PM - Visit the Olduvai Gorge Viewpoint
- After lunch, head to the viewpoint for sweeping views of the gorge and the landscape beyond. This spot is ideal for photography and quiet reflection on the rich history of the area.
- Your guide will explain how the environment has changed over millions of years.
Afternoon:
2:00 PM - Visit the Shifting Sands
- After the viewpoint, take a short drive to the Shifting Sands, a fascinating natural phenomenon. The sand dunes move across the landscape, shifting position due to the constant winds.
- This creates an ever-changing scene, with the red and brown dunes blending with the rocky, arid terrain of the gorge.
3:00 PM - Community Interaction (Optional)
- If time permits and community programs are available, you may have the opportunity to visit nearby Maasai or Datoga communities. This offers a chance to learn about their traditional lifestyles and their deep connection to the land, enriching your experience.
4:00 PM - Return to Lodge
