Discover Siena and the Palio di Siena
2nd July / 16th August.
Wait for the horse race in the evening; until then, visit the city during the day.
Your guide will show you the principal churches and palaces of the city, as well as the incredible views from its steep, narrow streets and medieval alleys.
In the afternoon, see a special live event: the blessing of the horse, held inside the church of the Contrada (district) or in front of it.
At 4 pm, the historical parade starts from Piazza Iacopo della Quercia, right next to the Cathedral, and moves along the streets of the city to the sound of the 'Sunto', the big bell at the top of the Torre del Mangia.
At 5 pm, the historical parade enters Piazza del Campo, where the standard-bearers of each Contrada wave their flags to the sky in spectacular displays.
At 6.45 pm, everything is ready for the horse race. People stand in the center of Piazza del Campo or sit on the benches all around the horse track.
Experience the emotion of watching the race from so close.
