The itinerary

Day 01

Kiel Sailing City and Boat Ride to Laboe

Schleswig-Holstein's state capital is known among sailors worldwide under this name. Kiel Week in particular, along with other top-class sailing regattas, made the Olympic city the world capital of sailing in 1936 and 1972. On the Kiel Fjord, however, it is not only about points and trophies; sailing is part of everyday life in Kiel. There are more than 2,200 water berths and 460 land berths for yachts and dinghies in the city's nine recreational boat harbors. In addition, there are numerous berths in the ports of the surrounding communities along the fjord. There is even a harbor area for traditional sailing ships and historic watercraft.

We will experience and visit some of them after about an hour and a half boat ride from Kiel center to Laboe.
After getting off the boat, we will walk on the beach. We will visit the Naval Memorial and the technical museum U 995.

Day 02

Naval Memorial and Panoramic Fjord Views

The silhouette of its tower, visible from far away and rising 85 meters above the Baltic Sea, shapes the face of the Kiel Outer Fjord. Two elevators or 341 steps lead to a viewing platform, from which a unique panoramic view of land and sea opens up.

Originally dedicated to the memory of the members of the Imperial Navy who died in the First World War, it was taken over again by the Deutscher Marinebund on May 30, 1954. It then became a memorial for those of all nations who remained at sea and, at the same time, a memorial for peaceful seafaring on free seas.

Day 03

U 995 Submarine Museum and Return to Kiel

On March 13, 1972, U 995 was transferred to Laboe by two floating cranes and placed on the beach in front of the naval memorial as a technical museum. The boat was put into service at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg on September 16, 1943. It belonged to Type VII C, of which a total of 693 units were completed by 1945. Until it was decommissioned on May 8, 1945, in Drontheim, Norway, U 995 was used primarily in the Norwegian Sea against convoys and departing security forces.

At the end of the two-hour visit to the monument and technical museum U 995, we will return by boat to the port of Kiel and then to the main train station.
