6-Hour Medina Walking Tour of Fez with UNESCO Medina Highlights

Pick up from your hotel or riad at 10 o'clock.

Start the tour from the main blue gate, Bab Boujloud in Arabic.

Begin your walking tour through the labyrinth of the medina of Fez, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, by visiting the beautiful 14th-century Medersa Bou Anania, the largest madrasa built by the Merinids. It is closed on Tuesdays. You will also see the nearby Dar el-Magana, which houses a clepsydra, or water clock, although current restoration may restrict access.

Visit the renowned Tanneries on the banks of the Oued Fes. Despite the strong smell, this remains one of the most picturesque souks in Fez.

Continue through es Seffarine and the brass workers, then down es-Sebbaghine with its colourful street of dyers and into the region of El-Atterine souk for spices and groceries. You will pass outside the Great Mosque and al-Qarawiyyin University, as well as the Medersa el-Atterine, which is considered one of the wonders of Moorish architecture and was built between 1323 and 1325 by Sultan Abu Said Othman Merinid.

Pass by the tomb of Moulay Idriss, the second ruler of the Idrissids and considered the founder of Fez. It was built in the 18th century and restored in the mid-19th century. Continue to the charming Place el-Najjarine with its fountain and caravans.
