Explore Messina's Historic Heart
- Join us on this tour of the beautiful city of Messina, known as the 'Gate to Italy' due to its unique location on the straits separating Sicily and Italy.
- Our tour starts from the square opposite the town hall. From there, walk to the 18th-century theatre that resisted the fury of the earthquake. The facade is still the original one, while only the interior is modern.
- Then, visit the historical centre, home to the Cathedral of Messina. Adjacent to the Cathedral is the Zodiac building, featuring beautiful paintings of the different zodiac signs. Marvel at the unique bell tower, added after the earthquake, decorated with golden statues and housing the largest astronomical clock in Europe. The Cathedral's interiors are simple yet stunning, with a beautiful golden altar. Outside, you will find a Renaissance fountain with four statues symbolizing four rivers. It is also possible to climb the 200 steps inside the bell tower to reach the top level and enjoy views over the city from the terrace above. The steps are not difficult, and travellers can take their time.
- Next, stroll through the pedestrian area, lined with cafes and beautiful old buildings, to reach the bronze statue of the city's hero in the battle against the Turkish Army.
- Our final stop is at a local bakery to enjoy a typical local pastry, the cannolo, or a granita if it is hot, the traditional Messinese sorbet.
Note: If the tour starts around 10 AM, tourists can attend the amazing carousel in the bell tower. It starts at noon and goes on for over 10 minutes. Tourists will hear sounds and music and will see the golden statues moving.
