Marina Heritage Walk through Ancient Cagliari

  • Meet your tour guide and begin the tour at the Sant'Eulalia Archaeological Area, which includes the remains of ancient Karales, the Latin name for Cagliari in the Roman age, during the late ancient and early medieval periods, before the migration of its inhabitants to the centre of Santa Igia. Once we have entered and paid the ticket, we will proceed to visit the area, following the established route within the archaeological site itself and observing in detail the ancient Roman-age neighbourhood before its abandonment.
  • Proceed to view from the outside the ruins of the Church of Santa Lucia, one of the oldest churches in Cagliari, founded in the time of the 'Giudicati', the small independent Sardinian kingdoms, about a century before the establishment of the colony of Castrum Callaretani by the Pisan settlers, today the historic quarter of Castello, on which the Marina district was directly dependent. Afterwards, we will stop for a coffee, offered by us, at a nearby café.
  • Visit the Church of Santa Eulalia, founded in the Aragonese age and dedicated to the patron saint of Barcelona herself, one of the few remaining examples of Catalan Gothic style in Cagliari.
  • Head to the fascinating as well as gloomy crypt of San Sepolcro, located in a border area between the historic quarters of Marina and Villanova. We will enter inside it and observe the details that stand out most to the eye.
  • End the tour with a view of the Lions Gate, a reinforced gate that formed the last defence to the south of the mighty fortifications of the Castello quarter.
  • Afterwards, if you wish, you can also climb above the Bastion of Saint Remy in order to see the magnificent panorama of Cagliari that begins from the monument itself.

Know before you go

  • History is full of cities facing the sea that based their power and wealth on their port, and Cagliari is one of them. Although not as famous and powerful as cities like Venice, Genoa, or Pisa, Cagliari is one of the most ancient cities not only in Italy but even in the whole of Europe, something that the guide, as an archaeologist and fellow citizen of the town itself, is proud of.
  • This is a walking tour where we climb up to the Lions Gate or the Bastion of Saint Remy, so it is not advised for customers with motion and/or respiratory issues.
