Explore Ravenna's Byzantine Mosaics and Historic Landmarks
- Meet your tour guide and visit the superb Basilica of San Vitale, one of Western Europe's most important examples of Byzantine art and architecture, with its green and gold glittering mosaics dating back to 535-549 AD. Very close to San Vitale is the late Roman Mausoleum of Galla Placidia, actually the private chapel of this powerful Regent-Empress who ruled the Western Roman Empire during 425-438 AD, coated with its hypnotic deep blue mosaics.
- Pay tribute to the great Dante Alighieri, the world-renowned author of the Divine Comedy, by visiting his tomb. He died in Ravenna in 1321.
- See the Basilica of San Francesco, with its flooded crypt.
- Explore the beautiful Piazza del Popolo, Ravenna's main square, and after that head to the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo, erected during the Kingdom of the Ostrogoths (493-510 AD). You will love its stunning mosaics dating back to the same age, showing Jesus Christ enthroned as a Roman emperor.
