8-Day Bird Watching Tour in Mongolia with Gobi and Gun Galuut

• Fly to Dalanzadgad in the South Gobi and transfer to camp.
• Depending on your arrival time, you may choose to wander around the area.

Possible bird sightings in the Gobi include Lammergeyer, also known as the Bearded Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Black Vulture or Cinereous Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Upland Buzzard, Eurasian Kestrel, Demoiselle Crane, Pallas's Sand Grouse, Little Owl, Eurasian Cuckoo, Hoopoe, Altai Snowcock, Isabelline Wheatear, Desert Wheatear, Wall Creeper, Mongolian Finch, Snow Finch, Common Redstart, Brown Shrike, tits, sandpipers, and more.

• Drive up to the valley, where you will spend most of the day. This narrow, small canyon has rich wildlife, and ibex and Mongolian gazelle may be seen nearby early in the morning.

• After a few hours of driving in the morning, reach Bayanzag.

• On the way, stop by a small water pond where you may see a number of the Gobi's little birds.

• Bayanzag neighbours the Flaming Cliffs, where the first dinosaur eggs were found by Roy Chapman Andrews and his expedition in the early 1920s.

• Transfer to the airport and fly to Ulan Bator, then drive to Gun Galuut. This is another spectacular area for birding in Mongolia, with two small lakes beside it where most migrating birds gather in May and September.

Possible bird sightings in Gun Galuut and Ikh Nart include Golden Eagle, Steppe Eagle, Black Vulture or Cinereous Vulture, Griffon Vulture, Upland Buzzard, Rough-legged Buzzard, Eurasian Kestrel, Saker Falcon, Amur Falcon, Black Kite, Demoiselle Crane, White-naped Crane, Ruddy Shelduck, Hoopoe, Isabelline Wheatear, Desert Wheatear, Mongolian Finch, Common Redstart, Brown Shrike, Mongolian Lark, and more.

• Spend a full day birding near the lakes or marshes and look for white-naped cranes.

• Drive for half a day to Ikh Nart. This nature reserve is protected by the local community. Argali and ibex are endangered wild animals listed in the Red Book of Mongolia.

• Poaching and competition with local livestock are major problems for them.

• Enjoy hiking and birding in the late afternoon.

• Spend a full day exploring and birding at the site.

• Return to Ulan Bator.
  • Optional: Hustai National Park, located 110 km west of Ulan Bator (about 2 hours).
  • This park is home not only to wild horses, but also to wildlife such as red deer, Mongolian gazelle, marmot, Corsac fox, lynx, and more.
