Description

Spend a day “one step from the sky” in the white landscape of the quarries. Visit the extraordinary marble quarries of Fantiscritti (Carrara) and enjoy the lard of Colonnata. In the afternoon, taste the exquisite wines of the Luni farm and its local products. The Fantiscritti marble quarry has an interesting open-air museum on the history of marble mining, which shows how quarrymen have lived their lives over the centuries, how the marble blocks have been cut and moved and the evolution of the equipment used. The quarry is still active.

Itinerary

Fantiscritti - Colonnata - Lunae Farms
- The guide will be holding a signboard with your name and the tour operator's name written on it to pick you up from your location (hotel or apartment) around 9.00 AM.
- Go to Carrara and visit the Fantiscritti, marble quarry, and museum.
- Continue to Colonnata, an Italian ancient picturesque village of the comune of Carrara. Here you will find yourself unable to resist tasting typical local cold cuts as you walk through the small streets of the ancient village.
- Arrive at Lunae (Luni) Farm to taste the wines and the best local products such as oil and cold cuts, visit the cellar and vineyards, and learn about the history and production of wines.
- Choose between 4 tasting menus and have a light lunch among olive trees and vineyards.

Know Before You Go

Our driver will pick you up in your location (hotel, B&B or private apartment) and take you on a journey through the “lunar landscape” of the marble quarries, with convenient Mercedes minivan, or similar car.

At Fantiscritti, we will take a Jeep and we will arrive inside the marble quarry, where an expert local guide will explain the secrets of the most famous Tuscan marble quarry, still in business. You can see how the marble is cut and visit the museum room inside the quarry. The huge hall of the Museum (entirely of Marble), has been used in the past as a cine set for the film with James Bond.

The tour will continue with a stop at the village of Colonnata, famous for its “Colonnata lardo”. We will visit the town, where you can see a spectacular view of the Apuan Mountains.

In the afternoon we will move to Luni farm winery, for a light lunch and a great wine tastings experience, including delicious local products, with 5 special wine tastings with local cold cuts.

The return is scheduled around 5.00 pm

In the Apuan Alps, the famous Carrara marble was formed from limestone sediments about 200 million years ago. The marble quarries in Carrara are recognised all over the world. Also, Michelangelo decided to obtain the raw material for his David in the Carrara marble quarries. One of essential quarries is Fantiscritti above Carrara. Fantiscritti is accessible to visitors from the caves in the mountain and on the top of the hill. Along the road leading to the quarry of Fantiscritti, one can admire three matching bridges, known as the bridges of Vara, which were the viaducts of the old Marble Railway.

Colonnata is situated in the Apuan Alps and is known worldwide for the pork fat delicacy "Lardo di Colonnata".

Visit the Lunae wine cellars for an authentic sensory experience.
