The old town of Quito is the largest and best-preserved architectural complex in America and one of the most important. It has won several awards since 1978, when it was declared a World Heritage Site, and was nominated as the Leading Destination of the World Travel Awards in 2013.
Because of the influence of several religious orders during colonial times, Quito is proud to have Franciscan, Jesuit, and Dominican religious and cultural monuments, which contributed to the development of the art and skill of Quito's craftsmen through the famous "Escuela Quiteña" (Quito School).
A major attraction about 25 km away from the city is the Equator and the Middle of the World City. It is not only one of the most iconic monuments, but also one of the most important places in history, with ancestral traditions of the native pre-Incan people who inhabited the area.
