The journey
The Imperial city of Petrópolis is located in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro, 68 km (42 miles) away, about a 1-hour drive from the capital. Frequented since the 19th century by Emperor Dom Pedro I and the royal family, the city became the summer capital of the Empire of Brazil when the entire court moved there. Quiet and charming streets make the tour very pleasant, while the mild climate, historic buildings, and preserved Atlantic Forest add to its appeal. Set among the forested mountains of Serra dos Órgãos, Petrópolis is also a well-known winter getaway with an excellent tourist and gastronomic structure.
