Description
The Family Ties cultural tour is a rare opportunity to visit two different Kenyan ethnic groups – the Maasai and the Kikuyu. See how Kenyan families merge their traditional culture with contemporary ways to build a sustainable future. Be warmly welcomed in the Maasai villages, and see the age-old way of living. Then, while visiting a Kikuyu family, you’ll see how a farming enterprise assists grandmother-headed households and provides food and financial support for many generations. This tour will give you deep insight into the customs and structures of rural Kenyan family life.
Itinerary
-
Day 1 - Kikuyu Family Ties
- Visit grandmother-headed households in Kenya that care for many generations.
- Marvel at the rural home of gracious grandmother Helen, who will introduce you to her large Kikuyu family. See her innovative pig farm. This project supported by One Horizon is an initiative to improve the livelihoods of grandmothers by economically empowering them through small-scale farming.
- Learn how Helen earns a sustainable income from the pigs while the biogas system from the waste powers her home. Cook a traditional Kenyan lunch and share it with some of the other grandmothers in the community.
- Enjoy some joyful singing and dancing, get inspired by listening to their powerful stories of life, and know how the program has helped the families.
-
Day 2 - Maasai Family Ties
- Drive to an authentic Maasai village on the outskirts of Nairobi, where you spend the day with the locals. One of the elders, Daniel, will take you on tour to explain how the Maasai have managed these precious lands for centuries.
- Spend time with Maasai mothers and help them build a new manyatta – a traditional Maasai homestead.
- Learn some ancient skills such as spear-throwing, use local plants to make medicinal remedies from the Maasai warriors and join them as they herd their cattles. In the afternoon, the women will share their stories as they help you make your own piece of traditional, beautifully crafted beaded Maasai jewellery.
- Join them in the singing, dancing before the tour ends.
