Visit the Sassi districts, including a rock church and a cave house. The Sassi di Matera are two districts - Sasso Caveoso and Sasso Barisano - in the Italian city of Matera, Basilicata, well known for their ancient cave dwellings dating back to the Paleolithic period. The "Sassi" have been described by Fodor's as one of the unique landscapes in Europe.
Have lunch and drive to the rock churches park called Parco della Murgia Materana to explore the area. It is a rugged regional park featuring churches carved out of caves.
