Casa Museo Guayasamín and Central Bank Museum
Casa Museo Guayasamín
This tour starts at your hotel at 9:00 a.m. We will take you to the Guayasamín Museum, located on Bellavista Hill, Quito's natural viewpoint. Oswaldo Guayasamín was the most important Ecuadorian painter of the 20th century. He worked all over the world and began his own collection, which he later opened as a museum. Today, there is a special building that had been his dream for many years. It is well known as la Capilla del Hombre, where some of his work is displayed. Unfortunately, he only saw the beginning of this dream, as he died in the US before the building was finished. In simple words, this is the best modern and contemporary art museum in Ecuador. After this visit, we can add a delicious lunch at a local restaurant; please let us know in advance.
Banco Central del Ecuador
Then, we will visit another wonderful museum in Quito, the Central Bank Museum. It offers a complete journey, from the vestiges of Ecuador's first inhabitants to contemporary and modern art exhibitions. In the first archaeological room, pieces from pre-Inca cultures are displayed, including basic stone and obsidian tools that, over time, gave way to more elaborate stone and ceramic utensils. From this period, especially elaborate ceramic pieces are exhibited. The Spanish conquest follows, and the next room presents the Quiteña Art School, developed by local and Spanish artists. This was a time of great artistic production, creating a syncretism between Spanish Catholic traditions and indigenous mythology. The next and final exhibition refers to republican art, reflecting a time of political change and struggles for independence. This is a great museum for learning more about Ecuadorian history through art. Finally, we will take you back to your hotel.
