Freiburg private walking tour
Start of the tour is the town square, where your guide will be waiting for you. Already in the town square, there are many historic buildings to discover. One of the is the Altes Rathaus, or old city hall, that was completed in 1559 and has a painted façade.
After our first introduction to Freiburg, we will continue to Kaiser-Joseph-Straße, the former Great Gass' of medieval Freiburg, until we reach the Siegesdenkmal, or victory monument, a monument to the German victory in the Franco-Prussian War of 1871. It’s a daily presence in all freiburgers life, serving both as an orientation marker and a meeting place.
From here we go back into the center, until we reach Freiburg's Münster, a gothic minster cathedral constructed of red sandstone, the cultural center of the historic city and an outstanding example of medieval Gothic. Be sure to notice the bizarrely shaped gargoyles, filigree steeple and the colorful farmers market on Münsterplatz, before you visit the interior of the Minster. After the interior we will show you some of the historical sites around the Münsterplatz or Cathedral Square, Freiburg's largest square. A farmer’s market is held here every day except Sundays. Other sights not to miss here are the Historical Merchants' Hall (Historisches Kaufhaus), is a Late Gothic building, and many more.
Now it’s time to move towards Konviktstraße, one of the most beautiful streets of Freiburg, until we reach Zum Roten Bären, the oldest hotel in Germany. From here we will also enjoy a view towards the Schlossberg, location of the castle (Schloss) of Freiburg from which the hill takes its name. The castle is today a ruin since it was demolished in the 18th century, but it retained its importance. In the 19th century a walkway was opened to enable access to the public and now the Schlossbergbahn funicular connects it to the city centre.
Back on the road, we walk to Augustinerplatz which is one of the central squares in the old city. Where before a Augustinian monastery existed, today there is the Augustiner Museum since 1921, and it is a popular gathering space for young people, together with it’s restaurants, bars, and the brewery and beer garden called 'Feierling'.
We now move to the Platz der alten Synagoge, or "Old Synagogue Square", is one of the more important squares on the outskirts of the historic old city. This was the location of the Freiburg synagogue until it was destroyed during the famous Kristallnacht in 1938, during the Nazi rule over Germany.
Our tour will then take us back to the beginning, back to the Rathausplatz, where you be set on your way, for a deeper and more personal exploration of this beautiful city.
