The itinerary

1
Day 01

Arrival in Ulaan Baatar and City Sightseeing

  • Meet your English-speaking Mongolian tour guide at the airport and head to your hotel.
  • After lunch, take a city sightseeing tour, including a visit to Gandan Monastery, famous for its huge gold-plated Buddha. It acts as a symbol of Mongolian national pride and cultural revival. See the monks chanting, spin some prayer wheels, and view the intricately embroidered thangkas.
  • Drive to the National Museum of Mongolian History, where you will see Mongolia and Central Asia artefacts from the Stone Age.

Day 02

Journey to the Homeland of Genghis Khaan

  • After breakfast, drive northeast from Ulaan Baatar to reach Khan Khentii Mountain National Park.
  • On the way, see the giant Genghis Khaan statue. The statue is 40 m high and depicts Genghis Khaan holding a golden whip in his right hand.
  • Pass through attractive landscapes of mountains, forests, grassland, and rivers.
  • Go for small hikes and capture the charming landscapes.

Day 03

Jamukha's Birthplace and Bereeven Monastery

  • After breakfast, tour the birthplace of Jamukha, who was not only the best friend of Genghis Khaan but also a major clan leader.

  • Have lunch at a tourist camp.

  • Drive to the ruins of Bereeven Monastery, which was built in the 17th century.

Day 04

Terelj National Park and Khukh Nuur Lake

  • After breakfast, drive to Terelj National Park.
  • Visit Khukh Nuur Lake, where Genghis Khaan was entitled as the Khan of the Mongols in 1189, one of the most significant moments in the history of Mongolia. Examine the extraordinary rock and stone formations here, some of which look like turtles and horse riders.

Day 05

Wildlife Encounters in Hustai National Park

  • Drive to Hustai National Park early in the morning and see Takhi, the Asian wild horse. During this journey, you might also spot wolves, argali sheep, and deer.
  • Go on a small hike to capture images of the awe-inspiring landscapes.
  • Visit Takhi's Small Museum.

Day 06

Boat Tour and Birdwatching at Ugii Lake

  • After breakfast, drive to Ugii Lake (altitude 1387 m; surface area 25 sq. km) and take a boat tour to indulge in birdwatching.

Day 07

Elsen Tasarkhai, Camel Ride, and Nomad Life

  • Drive to Elsen Tasarkhai, a unique area comprising forest and sand dunes.
  • Hop on the hump and experience a camel ride through the desert.
  • Visit a local nomad family and experience their way of life, culture, and traditions.
  • Have an authentic Mongolian barbecue for dinner, prepared in the traditional style using hot stones.

Day 08

Kharkhorin and Erdene-Zuu Monastery

  • After breakfast at the tourist camp, drive to Kharkhorin, the symbolic ruins of the 13th-century capital of the Mongol Empire. Midway, you will see Khusuu Tsaidam, a Turkic inscribed monument of the Turkic State (6th-8th centuries A.D.).
  • Visit Erdene-Zuu, the oldest monastery, with 108 stupas, built in 1586.
  • See the remains of the Great Mongol State period at the Kharkhorin Museum, as well as the Stone Age, Bronze Age, and Ancient State period halls.

Day 09

Return to Ulaan Baatar and Bogd Khan Palace

  • Drive back to Ulaan Baatar to visit Bogd Khan Palace, a series of beautiful traditional buildings where the last religious king of Mongolia resided.
  • Choose an optional city tour, where you will be taken to souvenir and cashmere shops before enjoying an evening concert of national folklore.

Departure from Ulaan Baatar

  • Have a sumptuous breakfast and prepare for departure as you will be transferred from your hotel to the airport.

What to bring

  • Warm, thin layers of clothing are best for this climate. Bring a waterproof jacket, hat, and headscarf to protect you from the sun and winds.
  • Don't forget insect repellent, sun cream, lip gloss, water-purifying tablets, and a first aid kit (medicine for headache, cold, diarrhoea, runny nose, bandages, and any medication prescribed for you).
  • Bring all your camera equipment.

Know before you go

  • The best time to make this trip is May to September, with the peak season in July for the Naadam Festival.
  • July and August are also the wettest months of the year, but rest assured that the climate still brings many sunny days.
  • The best time to visit the Gobi is June or September.
  • Comfortable, welcoming accommodation is vital to the enjoyment of your trip. You will be staying in a standard 3-4 star hotel in Ulaanbaatar and a tourist ger camp (traditional dwelling) with electricity (220V), showers, and other valuable services (2 to 4 people per ger) in the countryside.
  • The tour provider's staff personally checks all accommodation offered to ensure high standards.
  • In Ulaanbaatar, you will be dining at fine European and Asian cuisine restaurants. Mutton, beef, rice, and noodles form the basis of the Mongolian diet, so your meals will be based around this.
  • However, the trail rations may include vegetables, eggs, peanut butter, cheese, and sometimes yak. On some days, there will be lunchboxes from tourist camps. It is good food, and experience has shown that guests are happy with this arrangement.
  • Please let the guides know in advance if you are a vegetarian.
  • Alcoholic drinks are not provided on the trip, but tourists can bring their own.
  • The tour provider uses the highest-level, latest-model, air-conditioned private vans or 4WD vehicles for maximum comfort on your touring days.
  • A day's drive in the countryside will be approximately 200-250 km.
