Explore Trastevere, one of Rome's most charming quarters, on a 3-hour walking tour through layers of ancient, medieval, and early Christian history. Starting at Marcello Theatre, you will pass the former Jewish Ghetto, the main synagogue of Rome, the ancient Roman bridges, and Tiber Island, with time for a coffee or ice cream break. Cross the Tiber to wander Trastevere's narrow characteristic streets, charming shops, and restaurants, and visit the Basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere with its medieval mosaics and floors. The walk continues up Gianicolo Hill for panoramic terraces, the great Paola Fountain, and the monument to Garibaldi, where you can hear the noon cannon shot that Romans still use to set their watches.

Day 01

Ancient Rome, Trastevere, and Janiculum Hill

During our walking tour, we will see:

Marcello Theatre from the 1st century BC, Forum Boario, the Mouth of Truth, Tiber Island in the shape of a ship, the most ancient Roman bridge, and Trastevere, the medieval quarter of Rome. You will also see the 14th-century Casa Mattei and the Church of San Benedetto in Piscinula (visit if open), the smallest church in Rome, built on the very spot where St. Benedict lived in Rome.
Walk along Via della Lungaretta, an ancient Roman street, and see Anguillara Castle, also known as the House of Dante, the Church of San Crisogono, often visited by Michelangelo, and the Church of Santa Maria in Trastevere, built before the legalization of Christianity and the first church dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Continue to the Window of Fornarina, Raphael's beloved, the Church of San Pietro in Montorio, Bramante's temple - one of the wonders of architecture - and the monument to the defenders of the republic in 1849, among whom was Goffredo Mameli, the author of the Italian anthem "Fratelli d'Italia".
See the Paola Fountain, the largest in Rome, and reach Piazzale Garibaldi, the highest belvedere in Rome, on top of Janiculum Hill, included within the city limits in the 17th century as the 8th hill of Rome. Here you will find the equestrian statue of Garibaldi and the cannon that fires at noon, which Romans still use to set their watches.
