Know before you go

  • Damascene is a typical speciality of Meknes found only there. It is made of iron decorated with silver wire, a type of filigree brought in the 15th century by artisans from Toledo, Spain, during the Christian Inquisition in 1492. In Toledo, artisans still use gold wire for decoration, whereas in Meknes, artisans use silver wire.
  • The second speciality of Meknes is the embroidery of the Franciscan nuns. It includes reversible double-faced napkins and tablecloths. The Franciscan nuns taught Moroccan orphan girls this counted-stitch embroidery technique so they could earn an income. It served a social and economic purpose by helping the girls. This handicraft has preserved the same techniques and is now one of the main specialities of Meknes.
