Day 01

Walk the Ancient Appian Way

Begin the tour at the catacombs of St. Callixtus or St. Sebastian, depending on the chosen day.
Head to the Circus of Maxentius, where you will learn about Roman history and admire his palace before continuing to the Tomb of Romulus, his son.
Enter the Tomb of Cecilia Metella and take a look at Saint Nicholas Church, located just opposite.
Visit a Roman villa with its private baths.

This is a tailored tour, with no rush, and all your curiosities and needs will be fulfilled. This is a journey into Roman history. The Appian Way is called the "Regina viarum" in Latin, which means the queen of the roads, or the most important one. It was started in 312 BC during the Republican era, and it took one hundred years to be completed. The Appian Way was initially built for military purposes, but in the following years, it became the best place and most visible spot for richly decorated and expansive tombs and villas with private baths built by wealthy Romans. Later, Christians created their catacombs by digging into some natural hills. Then, in the first years of the fourth century AD, the emperor Maxentius built along the road a circus, his palace, and the mausoleum of his son Romulus.
The tour requires a dress code due to some sacred places we will be visiting, so shoulders and knees have to be covered.
