Trip details

What's Included

  • Round-trip transfers: 4x4 open safari vehicle or motorboat transport from your Maun hotel to the Delta boat launch station and back.

  • 3 nights of island camping: Private use of a designated wild island campsite with 2-person dome tents, comfortable bedrolls/sleeping mattresses, pillows, and sleeping bags.

  • Private field staff: A licensed English-speaking community guide/poler per two guests, plus a camp assistant and a dedicated bush cook.

  • All meals & drinks: 3 breakfasts, 4 lunches, and 3-course dinners cooked over the campfire, along with unlimited bottled drinking water, tea, and coffee.

  • Activities: Daily morning and afternoon water trails by mokoro, extensive multi-island walking safaris, and traditional poling and fishing lessons.

  • All permits: Okavango Kopano Mokoro Community Trust (OKMCT) community conservation levies, land entry permits, and local launch fees.

  • Camp amenities: A private bush-toilet enclosure (drop trench) and a bucket-shower setup with fire-heated water.

What's Not Included

  • Alcoholic beverages & sodas: You must buy your own beers, wine, or soft drinks at a grocery store in Maun before departing. The crew provides the cooler boxes and ice.

  • Personal flashlights & tech: Headlamps, flashlights, and portable power banks (there is zero electricity on the islands to charge cameras or phones).

  • Travel & evacuation insurance: You must hold valid medical travel insurance that covers wilderness evacuation.

  • Staff gratuities: Tips for your polers and cook are separate.

What to bring

  • Clothing & footwear (neutral colors only).

  • Neutral-toned shirts (3-4): Long-sleeve shirts in khaki, green, tan, or grey protect against the sun and tsetse flies. Avoid bright whites, dark blues, or blacks, which actively attract biting insects.

  • Lightweight trekking trousers (2-3): Quick-dry cargo or hiking pants. Avoid heavy denim jeans, which take days to dry if splashed by a paddle.

  • Warm layering fleece & windbreaker: Vital for freezing sunrise cruises and chilly nights around the campfire.

  • Sturdy trail shoes or hiking boots: Closed-toe footwear with thick socks is mandatory for the long island bush tracking walks.

  • Wide-brimmed sun hat: Crucial for open-water travel; ensure it has a chin strap so it does not blow away while the mokoro is moving.

  • Sun, bug, & health protection.

    • Polarized sunglasses: These are essential to cut through the blinding glare reflecting off the water channels.

    • High-SPF sunscreen & lip balm: Reapply multiple times a day while sitting unshaded in the boat.

    • Insect repellent (DEET or Picaridin): For dusk and dawn around the camp.

    • Personal medical kit: Pack prescription medications, malaria prophylaxis, motion sickness tablets, pain relievers, and rehydration sachets.

  • Tech & power (no grid electricity).

    • Two high-capacity power banks (10,000-20,000 mAh): To keep your phone and camera charged for all 4 days.

    • Extra camera/phone batteries: Keep them in your pocket or sleeping bag at night, as the cold Delta air drains lithium-ion batteries rapidly.

    • LED headlamp or flashlight: Essential for safely navigating the dark, unfenced campsite at night.

  • Personal comfort & hygiene.

  • Reusable water bottle: To refill from the camp's large purified water coolers.

  • Biodegradable wet wipes & hand sanitizer: For quick hygiene clean-ups on the island trails.

  • Small dry bag: Highly recommended to protect your phone, wallet, and camera from stray splashes or rain while sitting on the bottom of the mokoro.

Know before you go

  • Strict luggage and weight limits.

  • Soft bags only: Hard-shell suitcases will not fit in a mokoro. You must bring a small, flexible duffel bag or backpack.

  • Maximum 10-12 kg (22-26 lbs): Everything you pack - including your clothes, camera gear, and personal drinks - must fit within this limit.

  • Store excess in Maun: Safely leave your large suitcases and town clothes at your hotel reception or the operator's main office in Maun before departing.

  • Power and charging realities.

    • Zero electricity: You will be completely disconnected from the grid for 4 days. There are no solar panels or generators on the wild islands.

    • Bring multiple power banks: Pack at least two high-capacity portable power banks (10,000 to 20,000 mAh each).

    • Conserve battery: Keep your phone on airplane mode. Cold Delta nights drain lithium-ion batteries rapidly, so sleep with your camera and phone batteries inside your sleeping bag.

  • Intense weather and sun exposure.

    • No shade canopy: You will spend hours sitting low in an open boat with water reflecting the sun directly onto your face.

    • High sun protection: Polarized sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap, and high-SPF sunscreen are absolutely mandatory.

    • Extreme temperature shifts: Delta mornings are freezing, while midday is intensely hot. You must wear layers that you can easily remove as the day warms up.

  • Wildlife safety and camp rules.

    • No swimming or wading: The crystal-clear channels are home to large populations of crocodiles and territorial hippos. Never enter the water unless your guide explicitly tells you it is a safe, shallow sandbank.

    • Unfenced campsites: Animals walk directly through the campsites at night. Never keep food, candy, or scented toiletries in your tent, as this attracts hyenas and elephants.

    • Night movements: Never leave your tent after dark without a headlamp and a direct escort from your guiding team.
