Trip details

What's Included

  • Round-trip transfers: Ground transport in an open 4x4 safari vehicle or a motorized boat from your hotel in Maun to the designated Delta mokoro station (such as Boro or Daunara) and back.

  • Professional field staff: A licensed, English-speaking community poler/guide who navigates the waters and leads island bush walks, plus a dedicated camp assistant or chef to handle chores.

  • Camping gear & accommodation: Spacious 2-person dome tents equipped with comfortable bed rolls or camp mattresses, pillows, sleeping bags, and a basic bush-toilet setup.

  • All daily meals: Freshly prepared breakfasts, picnic or hot lunches, and 3-course bush dinners cooked over an open campfire.

  • Park & community fees: All required government park entry permits, OKMCT community conservation levies, and local community launch site fees.

  • Water: Unlimited bottled purified drinking water kept in camp coolers throughout the trip.

What's Not Included

  • Alcohol & soft drinks: You must purchase your own sodas, beers, or wine in Maun before departure. The operator will provide ice and cooler space to keep them chilled.

  • Personal gear: Items such as flashlights/headlamps, insect repellent, sunblock, and personal toiletries.

  • Travel insurance: Medical or evacuation insurance is strictly your responsibility.

  • Tips/gratuities: Tips for your guide/poler and camp cook are voluntary but highly appreciated (a standard baseline is roughly $15-$20 USD per day for the guiding team).

What to bring

  • Clothing (pack layers & neutral colors)

  • Neutral-toned shirts: Long-sleeve shirts in khaki, green, or grey protect against the intense sun and tsetse flies. Avoid bright whites, dark blues, or blacks, which attract biting flies.

  • Warm jacket/fleece: Mornings on the water and nights by the campfire are freezing. Bring a windbreaker and a thick fleece.

  • Sturdy walking shoes: Closed-toe trail shoes or broken-in hiking boots with thick socks for the island bush walks.

  • Lightweight trousers: Avoid jeans, which dry slowly if splashed. Choose breathable cargo pants.

  • Sun hat: A wide-brimmed hat with a chin strap so it does not blow off while the mokoro is moving.

  • Sun & bug protection

    • Polarized sunglasses: These cut the harsh glare reflecting off the water channels.

    • High-SPF sunscreen & lip balm: Reapply frequently while sitting in the open, unshaded boat.

    • Insect repellent: Formulations containing DEET or Picaridin for evenings around the campfire.

Know before you go

  • Strict Luggage & Weight Limits

    • Soft bags only: Hard-shell suitcases will not fit in a mokoro. Bring small, flexible duffel bags or backpacks.

    • Strict weight limits: A standard mokoro holds two passengers and their gear. Your personal luggage should not exceed 10-12 kg (22-26 lbs) per person.

    • Pack light: Excess gear sinks the boat lower in the water, making it harder to pole and more prone to tipping. Leave large luggage at your Maun hotel.

  • Extreme Weather & Sun Exposure

    • Zero shade: You will sit in an open boat on reflective water for 2 to 4 hours at a time with no canopy.

    • Sun protection: A wide-brimmed hat, polarized sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are non-negotiable.

    • Layers are key: Delta mornings are surprisingly freezing, while midday temperatures scorch. Bring a warm fleece for sunrise walks and lightweight, long-sleeve clothing for the heat.

  • Wildlife Realities & Safety

    • No swimming: The delta waters look clear and inviting, but they host large populations of crocodiles and hippos. Never swim unless your guide explicitly identifies a rare, shallow, safe sandbank.

    • Hippos have right of way: Hippos are territorial and dangerous. If your poler stops, reverses, or waits in the reeds, follow their instructions silently. They are navigating around deep hippo paths.

    • Unfenced campsites: Animals walk directly through the campsites at night. Never leave your tent after dark without your guide, and keep all food out of your tent to avoid attracting hyenas or elephants.

  • Comfort & Bathroom Facilities

    • Bush toilets: This is a rustic wilderness experience. Operators dig a temporary "drop toilet" trench behind a canvas screen for the group.

    • Bucket showers: Showers are simple canvas bags filled with water heated over the campfire.

    • No electricity: There are no charging points on delta islands. Bring a fully charged power bank and extra camera batteries.

  • Health & Cash

    • Malaria zone: The Okavango Delta is a high-risk malaria area. Consult a travel doctor beforehand regarding prophylaxis.

    • Tipping cash: Bring local Botswana Pula (BWP) or US Dollars in small, clean bills for tipping your polers and camp assistants, as there are no card machines in the bush.
