Arrival and Doors-Off Okavango Delta Helicopter Flight

Upon stepping off your commercial airline flight in Maun or Kasane, the arrival process flows seamlessly.

Helicopter flights are booked in partnership with Helicopter Horizons and depart directly from premium safari lodges or Maun Airport.

Doors-Off Experience: The doors are removed entirely, offering a direct, crisp connection with the environment and zero window glare for photography.

Low & Slow Altitude: They fly lower than airplanes, allowing the pilot to safely hover or circle over massive herds, deep elephant pathways, and hippo pods.

Custom Flight Add-ons: Options include specific packages like a 15-minute Champagne Island Stop, where the pilot lands on a remote, otherwise unreachable Delta island.

Take to the skies for an unforgettable helicopter scenic flight and experience the incredible landscapes of the Okavango Delta.

You will also have the opportunity to view wildlife in its natural habitat from the magic and unique perspective of a helicopter.

Three- or four-seater helicopters are available, with doors removed for unrestricted photo and video opportunities.

For keen photography enthusiasts, early morning or late afternoon flights can be arranged to capture the best light.

Alternatively, flights can be offered outside activity time so as not to interfere with your camp activities.

It is not our policy to upset any of the animals during the flights, and pilots are careful to keep their distance when needed.

Trip details

What's Included

  • Aviation fuel and pilot rates: The base charter rate covers all aircraft operating costs, fuel, and professional commercial pilot services.

  • Pre-flight briefing: Includes a comprehensive pre-takeoff mapping session where your pilot outlines the flight paths, water channels, and potential herd locations.

  • Over-wing high visibility: Flights use specialized aircraft, such as Cessna 206s, with wings positioned on top of the fuselage to keep your downward ground view completely clear.

  • All passenger safety briefings: Full ground coordination and support at the Maun International Airport terminal prior to boarding.

What's Not Included

  • National Departure Taxes: Standard commercial or governmental departure taxes, roughly US$ 20 per person, are often itemized separately upon airport check-in.

  • Island Champagne Stops: Landing on a remote Delta island for mid-flight sundowner drinks is an optional upgrade, typically adding around US$ 50 per person.

  • Gratuities: Tips for the pilot and ground handlers are entirely at your discretion and handled separately from the booking cost.

What to bring

  • Layer warm clothing: the air feels incredibly cold at 500 feet with the helicopter doors off, even during summer. Bring a windbreaker, a fleece jacket, and a hair tie.

  • Neutral safari colors: wear khaki, green, or brown clothing. Avoid bright white, which creates window reflections on airplanes, and dark blue or black, which attracts tsetse flies on the ground.

Know before you go

  • Soft bags only: you must use soft-sided duffel bags without rigid frames, wheels, or pull-out handles.

  • Strict weight limit: total luggage weight is strictly capped at 15 kg (33 lbs) per person, including all hand luggage and camera gear.

  • Camera strap mandatory: for doors-off helicopter flights, every camera, phone, or tablet must be securely tethered to your neck or wrist with a heavy-duty strap.

  • Loose items forbidden: no loose lenses, lens caps, hats, or scarves are permitted inside a doors-off cabin, as they can fly out and strike the rotors.

  • Bumpy midday air: the intense African sun heats the ground and causes thermal air turbulence. Book the earliest morning or late afternoon flight for the smoothest ride.

  • Motion sickness prep: if you are prone to motion sickness, take medication 30 minutes before takeoff. The pilot makes sharp, sweeping banks so passengers on both sides can see wildlife.

  • Wildlife is wild: animal sightings are never guaranteed. You will always see the epic channels and elephant paths, but spotting large herds requires patience and seasonal luck.

  • Book long in advance: scenic flights are highly popular and utilize small 3-to-5-seater aircraft. Secure your slot months ahead of your travel date.

  • Cash for taxes: keep small denominations of US Dollars or Botswana Pula cash on hand to pay any unexpected local airport passenger taxes at Maun Airport.
