Explore the Ancient Port City of Ostia
- Get picked up by your tour guide at Piramide Train/Metro Station or your hotel.
- Make your way to Ostia and learn about its history. Founded as one of the first fortified colonies at the end of the Tiber River, probably during the 6th century B.C., it immediately became a river port, acquiring the important commercial function of supplying Rome with foodstuffs thanks to ships arriving from every part of the Mediterranean Sea. Its urban character soon changed, and Ostia became a rich city of 150 acres where more than 50,000 people lived. At the end of the Roman Empire, the town was abandoned, and river mud covered it.
- Be amazed by more than 100 years of excavations and by the rediscovered mosaics, frescoes, and remarkable architecture.
- Travel back to the Roman Age as you explore the area, including the theatre, baths, public fountains and latrines, barracks of the fire brigades, temples of different religions such as the Capitolium and the Temple of Mithras, the Forum, and the Guilds Square.
- Visit some of the local shops, such as the bakery, wine bar, laundry, and dwellings.
