Walking Tour of the Royal Palace of Caserta

  • Meet your tour guide at your hotel in Caserta and travel to the Royal Palace.

  • Head inside the atrium of the building, where you can see a majestic staircase with 116 steps and marble statues marking the way.

  • Climb to the upper vestibule and the Palatine Chapel, with vaulted ceilings and gilded rosettes. To the left of the chapel is the entrance to the royal apartments, decorated with refined taste where Rococo meets the Neoclassical era. The finest painters, cabinetmakers, and carvers of the time contributed to creating some of the highest decorative achievements of the 18th century in Italy. This floor is divided into the new apartment, the apartment of the King, Murat's apartment, the old apartment, and the court theatre.

  • In 1751, King Charles of Bourbon, as part of the vast reorganization of the Kingdom of Naples, commissioned the architect Luigi Vanvitelli to design a palace that could compete with the great residences of European monarchs, particularly the Royal Palace of Versailles.

  • The great residence includes four courtyards and many rooms (1,200), chapels, museums, and theatres. The park covers 120 acres and features long avenues, fountains, and many buildings to be explored on foot or by cart.

  • Please note that the palace is closed on Tuesdays.
