Cotopaxi National Park and José Ribas Refuge
Drive from Quito along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, heading south to Cotopaxi National Park. Once inside the park, visit a natural museum to learn about the nature, geology, history, and eruptions of Cotopaxi volcano (5,897 m).
Next, stop at Limpiopungo Lake (3,800 m) for an acclimatization walk while observing a variety of birds, such as ducks, eagles, and Andean gulls, with your Cotopaxi tour guide.
Continue by vehicle to the parking area (4,600 m). On clear days, you can enjoy an incredible view of the Andean landscape.
You can then take a 45-minute hike to the José Ribas refuge (4,800 m), where you can taste a delicious hot chocolate to keep warm.
Enjoy Ecuadorian food at a local restaurant (optional).
Finally, return to Quito.
