Your experience begins with tranquil mokoro excursions, gliding silently through the Okavango Delta's winding channels in a traditional dugout canoe guided by an expert poler. As you move through the clear waters, you may encounter hippos surfacing in the distance, elephants feeding along the reed-lined banks, and rich birdlife such as kingfishers, herons, and fish eagles, while the slow pace reveals details from water lilies to insect life. Day 01

3-Day Mokoro Safari and Delta Camping Experience

Day 1: Mokoro Excursion

Departing from Island Safari Lodge, this trip heads north for approximately 45 minutes by boat to Boro village. Once past the village, you enter game-viewing mode for the rest of your journey.

Depending on where your campsite is situated, and what game sightings you experience along the way, this trip should take approximately 3-5 hours, with a packed breakfast and lunch en route.

On arrival at your campsite, the activities will include setting up camp and preparing for the night, followed by a late afternoon sunset cruise returning to camp in time to prepare the evening meal and sit around the fire appreciating your surroundings.

Day 2: Mokoro and Walking Safari

Explore the delta further by mokoro before landing on one of the islands for a walking safari.

A walking safari enables you to be at one with nature as you walk amongst wildlife, immersing yourself in the African experience and its sights, smells, and sounds.

Your experienced guide will escort you and provide detailed explanations of spoor, wildlife, and the hidden secrets you won't see from a game drive vehicle.

Departing from Island Safari Lodge after a wholesome breakfast, this trip heads north for 45 minutes on water to an area called the Boro.

Day 3: Mokoro Excursion and Sunset Cruise

On arrival at the Boro, you will be transferred into mokoro dugout canoes. Guided by local qualified guides and polers, you now enter low-poling mode for the rest of the trip. The rest of the day is spent poling and exploring the channels of the Okavango Delta with its array of aquatic life and breathtaking beauty.

Glide past the islands that dot the delta and the surrounding channels for a unique experience that sets you amongst nature.

Arriving back at Island Safari Lodge for the afternoon, a sunset boat cruise on the Thamalakane River is included. The cruise includes some snacks, but any extra beverages and alcohol can be purchased at the lodge bar and restaurant to take with you on the cruise.

Day 4: Your Adventure Ends

On this morning, check out after enjoying a wholesome breakfast. A transfer to the airport can be arranged for your onward travel.

Know before you go

To qualify for these rates, a minimum of 2 people is required. If there is only 1 person, add 70% to the rate.

Booking ahead: Campsites inside the National Parks must be reserved far in advance, as last-minute walk-ins are largely not permitted.

Seasonal changes: Travel during the dry season (May to October) for the best wildlife viewing and the easiest driving conditions on sandy roads. In the wet season, roads can become impassable.

  • Digital detox: Mobile camps are completely off-grid. Prepare to be disconnected, with no WiFi or cell service.
  • Early starts: Days begin early with pre-sunrise wake-up calls (around 5:30 AM) to catch predators at their most active.
  • Game drives: You will spend hours bouncing along uneven tracks in open 4x4 safari vehicles.
