4-Day Chief's Island Safari Experience
Day 1 - Arrival at Chief's Island - Camp Hippo
Upon arrival at Maun Airport, guests are welcomed by our professional guide before departing by open game-viewer vehicle toward the Okavango Delta. The journey passes through local villages and wilderness areas, gradually transitioning into the floodplains and waterways that define this remarkable ecosystem. From Boro Boat Station, guests continue by motorized boat through the Delta channels, enjoying a scenic transfer with opportunities to see hippos and a variety of birdlife along the way. Arriving at Camp Hippo, guests are accommodated in spacious tents larger than 3x3 metres, each equipped with beds, a private veranda, and an en-suite bathroom featuring a toilet, shower, and sink. Throughout the stay, camp staff manage all chores, including meals, cleaning, and camp setup, creating a comfortable wilderness experience.
The evening is spent settling into camp, enjoying the tranquil surroundings, and relaxing around the fire as the sounds of the Delta come alive after sunset.
Day 2 - The Hidden Channels
Wake up to the sounds of the Delta as birds call through the reeds and hippos grunt in the distance. After an early breakfast, set out on a morning motorized boat safari through the winding channels and lagoons of the Okavango Delta. Glide across calm waters while exploring deeper sections of the floodplains where large pods of hippos are often found resting and surfacing nearby. Your guide will navigate quietly through the waterways, allowing for close yet respectful wildlife encounters while also searching for crocodiles, elephants crossing the channels, and an incredible variety of birdlife.
Return to Camp Hippo for a relaxed brunch and time to rest during the heat of the day. Guests can unwind around camp, enjoy the peaceful surroundings, and take in uninterrupted views of the Delta wilderness.
Later in the afternoon, depart for another scenic boat safari to explore new waterways and hidden lagoons along the edges of Chief's Island, one of the richest wildlife areas in the Delta.
Day 3 - Adventure & Island Exploration
After breakfast, set out on a longer boat excursion that blends tranquil water exploration with a guided island walk, water levels permitting. Glide through winding channels framed by papyrus and reed beds, watching for birds skimming the surface and wildlife gathering along the banks as your guide interprets the subtle rhythms of the Delta.
Step ashore on one of the islands near Chief's Island and experience the wilderness on foot. Here, the pace slows and the focus sharpens, following tracks in the sand, reading signs of recent animal movement, and learning how every footprint, call, and broken branch tells a story. This is where the Delta feels most intimate, with the chance of encountering elephants moving quietly through the trees, herds of antelope grazing in open clearings, or, if fortune allows, the distant presence of predators.
Return to Camp Hippo in the late afternoon for a well-earned rest, followed by dinner and storytelling under a vast, star-filled sky.
Day 4 - Chief's Island Departure
On the final day, guests enjoy a leisurely breakfast while taking in the last quiet moments of the wilderness and the surrounding waterways. As they prepare for departure, they set off by boat, gliding through the channels and open waters, offering one final perspective of this pristine landscape and its rich birdlife and wildlife activity along the banks.
The journey continues with a transfer to the airport, marking the end of the safari experience. Guests leave with lasting memories of meaningful wildlife encounters, subtle cultural touches, and the peaceful, untouched beauty of Chief's Island, carrying the spirit of the wilderness with them long after departure.
