Marrakech to Imlil and Trek to Toubkal Refuge

  • Transfer to the little village of Imlil and begin the trek.

  • Head along the Maizane Valley, first passing the village of Armed, and then continue to the shrine of Sidi Chamharouch.

  • Continue east by crossing the flood plains and following mule tracks up into the high rocky cliffs above the valley.

  • Cross the river to reach the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamharouch, which attracts tourists and pilgrims. From here, the trail continues to climb steadily, snaking and zigzagging its way up to the snowline and the Toubkal Refuge (3206m), where you will stop for the night.

Early Ascent of Toubkal Summit and Return to Marrakech

  • Early in the morning, start the trek to the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa.

  • Take the route up the south cirque, crossing the stream above the refuge. The walk is relatively straightforward, but the scree and the altitude can make some sections quite difficult. The views along the way make the journey more than worthwhile.

  • Reach the summit and take in the vistas across the surrounding landscape. From here, there are unrestricted views in every direction, from the Marrakech Plain to the High Atlas in the north and as far south as the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara.

  • Retrace your steps and head down from the mountain towards Imlil, and then continue to Marrakech.
