Join this guided tour of the Hokkaido Shrine in Japan, where the guide will explain the history of Shintoism. Walk along and stop at Temizuya, a Shinto water ablution pavilion where visitors can purify themselves before praying at the main shrine building. You will also get to visit a shop selling amulets, ema (votive picture tablet) and Omikuji (written fortune).

Hokkaido Shrine Visit
- Meet the tour guide, who will start by explaining about Shintoism and the history of Hokkaido Shrine, including the frontier spirit in Hokkaido at the second gate, which is the most famous gate because it is thought of as a sacred power place. The guide will continue explaining while walking along the front approach (300 meters long) toward the front yard of the main shrine building.
- Then you will purify yourselves by washing hands at Temizuya, meaning a Shinto water ablution pavilion before the prayer. After that, proceed to the main building. You will also get to learn how to pray in front of the gods.
- After prayer, move to the shop selling amulets, Ema (votive picture tablet) and Omikuji (written fortune). The guide will explain about them. Know about the daily lives related to Shintoism and traditional customs. For example, parents take their kids to a shrine to pray for their health and happiness when they reach 3, 5, and 7 years old. This is a ritual called Shichi-Go-San. The people take a baby to a shrine when a baby reaches 100 days old to pray for the baby’s happiness. People often visit Hokkaido Shrine to obtain divine blessings.
