Walk Through Castello's Medieval Alleys and Towers

  • Start the tour at Bastione di Saint Remy, built of white limestone in the late 1800s. Ascend the outstanding double flight of stairs and pass through an imposing archway to reach a wonderful terrace with expansive views of the city and the sea.
  • Continue to the Cathedral of Santa Maria, dedicated to Saint Cecilia and the Virgin Mary. Located in Piazza Palazzo, between the historic Palazzo Regio, formerly the palace of the monarch's representative and now the headquarters of the Prefecture, and the old Palazzo di Città, the cathedral stands in the renowned medieval neighbourhood of Castello, one of Cagliari's key districts.
  • Visit the St. Pancras Tower, constructed to defend Castello's northern flank from the growing threat posed by Aragon. Built from substantial limestone blocks, it is now accessible to the public via the nearby Palazzo delle Seziate after meticulous restoration.
  • Follow Piazza Arsenale from the tower, noting Porta Cristina along the way, and continue to the Cittadella dei Musei, where you will find a wonderful archaeological museum with many outstanding items dating back thousands of years.
  • Explore Torre dell'Elefante, where the climb is well worth it for the additional beautiful views. Finished in 1307 and named after a marble elephant figure, the Elephant Tower fortified Castello's southwest corner and provides a mesmerizing conclusion to the tour.
