Take on the challenge of hiking Toubkal, a mountain peak in southwestern Morocco located in Toubkal National Park. At 4,167 metres, it is the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco, North Africa, and the Arab World. This hike requires no previous mountaineering experience, and you can complete the trek to the summit and back within 2 days.

Reach the summit and enjoy views of the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north, and the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara far to the south.

Day by day

The itinerary

Day 01

Trek from Imlil to the Toubkal Refuge

Go to the village of Imlil and begin the trek.
Head to the Mizane Valley, passing the village of Aremd and the shrine of Sidi Chamarouch.
Continue east, cross the flood plains, and move up to the high rocky cliffs above the valley.
Cross a river and reach the pastoral shrine of Sidi Chamarouch, a pre-Islamic marabout shrine located at 2,350 m altitude, 5 km north of the peak of Jebel Toubkal.
Climb up to the snowline towards the Toubkal Refuge (3,206 m) and stop for the night.

Day 02

Summit Jebel Toubkal and return to Imlil

Begin the ascent to the summit of Jebel Toubkal, the highest peak in Northern Africa. Reach the south cirque and cross the stream above the refuge as the altitude increases.
Reach the summit and enjoy views of the Marrakesh Plain to the High Atlas in the north, and the Anti-Atlas and the Sahara far to the south.
Head back towards Imlil.
