The itinerary

1
Day 01

Cusco to Huayllabamba via Ollantaytambo and Km 82

  • Get picked up from your accommodation in Cusco early in the morning and begin your journey to Km 82, where the Inca Trail begins.

  • Stop in Ollantaytambo for breakfast (not included) before continuing to Chilca at Km 82.

  • Meet the porters and cooks who will accompany you on the trail and begin the trek.

  • Stop for lunch along the way and continue to the campsite at Huayllabamba.

  • Enjoy a hot meal and spend the night at the campsite.

Day 02

Hike to Dead Woman's Pass and Camp at Pacaymayo

  • Have breakfast and start hiking, ascending to the highest point on the trail at over 4,200 meters above sea level. This place is called Dead Woman's Pass (Warmiwanusca).

  • Climb approximately 7 kilometres to Warmiwanusca.

  • Take beautiful pictures and relish the scenic landscapes.

  • Enjoy a delicious lunch and descend to Pacaymayo, where you will camp overnight.

Day 03

Pacaymayo to Runkurakay, Sayacmarca, and Wiñay Wayna

  • Head towards Runkurakay after breakfast.

  • Visit the archaeological site of Runkurakay, a former resting lodge for ancient pilgrims.

  • Cross the second pass at 3,800 m above sea level and descend to Sayacmarca, another important archaeological site where you will have lunch.

  • Enter the high Andean cloud forest and enjoy nature.

  • Descend to the campsite at Wiñay Wayna, passing an important archaeological site and a temple where offerings are made to the sacred mountain spirits.

  • Reach your campsite and spend the final night on the trail.

Day 04

Walk to Machu Picchu and Return to Cusco

  • Walk to the Sun Gate (Inti Punku), the ancient entrance to the city of Machu Picchu.

  • See the ruins in all their glory and enjoy a guided tour of the citadel.

  • Descend to the village of Aguas Calientes by bus. From there, return to Ollantaytambo by train and then travel by bus back to your hotel in Cusco.

Train departure: between 8.00 pm and 9.00 pm.

  • Warm clothes, including a jacket, fleece, sweaters, and one pair of socks per day

  • Rain jacket or a poncho, and waterproof trousers (especially for the rainy season from November to March)

  • Flashlight and batteries, pocket knife, and matches

  • Camera

  • Water bottle, preferably metal so it is more heat-resistant

  • Hat and/or beanie to protect you from the sun and the cold

  • High-factor sunblock and insect repellent

  • Toilet paper

  • Some extra snacks (biscuits, energy bars, chocolate)

  • Towel

  • Swimsuit (recommended for the hot springs)
