Florence Walking Tour
- Walking Tour (from North to South to West and to East of the city) :
Duomo, Baptistery (with its 3 famous doors, one of which is called the “ gate of Paradise”), the Duomo's bell tower.
Through, Via Calzaiuoli. Stop at the church of Orsanmichele. A "strange" church.
Piazza Signoria (one of the most beautiful squares of Italy !) with its Palazzo Vecchio (the Town Hall), and the Loggia Dei Lanzi. Among the many statues of the square, there is one that represents the person who sponsored the Uffizi!
Through the courtyard of the Uffizi Gallery, we will arrive at the Arno river.
Walking to the Ponte Vecchio ( Old Bridge ) and crossing it we will be on the other side of the Arno river, the south side. This area of Florence is known as “ Oltrarno”.
In a few steps, we will reach the Palazzo Pitti ( Pitti Palace, once the residence first of the Duke of Florence, then of Grand Dukes of Tuscany and at the end of the King of Italy).
We will leave the Pitti Palace and through a small, narrow street ( so typical in this area of Florence) we will reach Piazza Santo Spirito, one of the most "florentine" squares and the Chiesa di Santo Spirito whose first projects was made by Filippo Brunelleschi (the same architect that built the Dome).
The Santo Spirito church played an important role in the life of Michelangelo!
Now we will leave the “ Oltrarno” area but we will use another bridge to come back to the north side of the Arno river. We will cross the famous Ponte Santa Trinita.
This bridge was destroyed as the other bridges of Florence (except the Old Bridge) in World War II but it was reconstructed “ where it was “ and “ how it was ”.
After crossing the Santa Trinita Bridge we enter Via Tornabuoni (probably the richest street in Florence), with its famous fashion brands.
Via Tornabuoni faces a side of the Palazzo Strozzi, one of the most beautiful renaissance palaces in Florence. The Strozzi family was one of the richest families in Florence. We will walk through the courtyard of the palace, a typical “ renaissance courtyard".
From the Strozzi Palace, we will be just a few steps from Piazza Della Repubblica.
Note: A walking tour considers seeing the sites from outside.
