Description
The Uffizi is one of the oldest and finest galleries in the world. It was commissioned by Giorgio Vasari for Cosimo I de' Medici in 1560. He wanted to reunite the 13 city magistracies in a single location. The project consisted of two long Doric-style porticos that extended from Palazzo Vecchio to the Loggia della Signoria. The work was completed in 1580 by A. Parigi and B. Buontalenti. Just a few years later, in 1581, Francesco I de' Medici, Cosimo's son and the new Grand Duke of Tuscany by then, established a private gallery with statues and other precious objects on the top floor of the east wing of the Uffizi, all part of the private family collection of art objects. The gallery opened to the public in 1769 under Grand Duke Peter Leopold. The museum is spread out over three floors. On the second floor, you'll find the main hall and some of the most interesting halls in the museum. The 45 halls on this floor display works of art from the 13th to the 18th centuries. My tour is focused on the Renaissance paintings of the Medici collection.
