Guarded by a phalanx of mighty volcanos, the cobalt-blue waters of Lake Atitlan represent one of the real wild draws of southern Guatemala. Set high in the country's Sierra Madre mountains, up on the windward side of the Pacific belt, the unique climactic conditions here create the perfect conditions for farming avocados and coffee.
Over the years though, the timber-built villages of the indigenous Kaqchiquel folk have been transformed from agricultural centres to major tourist draws.
