Described by Lonely Planet as “a scene from the Lord of Rings”Lake Bunyonyi is one of the best places to chill and relax in Uganda. Famous as“Place of many little birds”,the lakelies in south western Uganda between Kisoro and Kabale, close to the border with Rwanda. Located at 1,962 m above sea level, the lake is about 25 km long and 7 km wide. The depth of the lake is assumedto be between 900 m to maximum around 2952 ft, hence it accounts for the second deepest in Africa.

Bunyonyi is also one of the few lakes in the region that is rumoured to be free of bilharzia and hence safe for swimming. The lake appears on the 5,000 Ugandan shilling note under the title “Lake Bunyonyi and terraces”.

Towns on its shores include Kyevu and Muko, while its 29 islands include the Punishment Island, Bushara Island and Byoona Amagara. It is a popular location for water sports and is known for the surrounding terraced hillsides. It is popular with both foreign and domestic tourists and there is a wide variety of tourist accommodation.

So many things are said about this holiday destination as in how big it is and how deep the islands are. Tourists might have read in articles, magazines or blogs but one thing I am sure of, all those words dissipate in the air. I know, you will be just awed by the magical beauty seeing it snake around the 29 islands of different shape and sizes surrounded by a ring of terraced lush green vegetation.
