Southeast Asia bound travelers looking to experience one of the area’s best tropical getaways, look no further than the Cebu Islands. Located in the heart of the Philippine island chain, this modern, developed province is a constant presence in the top ten lists of the Indian Ocean’s best destinations.  Home to the country’s oldest city (Cebu City) and a quick jump to a handful of other amazing island destinations, this tropical hub is the perfect place to find some serious R&R.

What is there to do in and around Cebu Island?

Dating back to the 13th century, Cebu and its surrounding areas are saturated in culture and history. One of the main destinations of world-explorer Ferdinand Magellan, Cebu has been an important locale on the world’s map since the early 16th century.  The city itself is home to some interesting museums, churches, temples and monuments, though the main attraction to Cebu lies in the surrounding tropical paradises.

The best Islands of Cebu!

Though there are over ten popular island-hopping destinations from Cebu, here are five specific islands that draw in most tourists.

Mactan Island

Mactan Island

Just a few kilometers away from mainland Cebu (connected by bridges), Mactan is the area’s most densely populated island. One of the most visited and easiest to reach destinations for tourists, this tropical beauty has many reasons for being so renowned. From its coral-filled waters (making for superb snorkeling and diving) to its pristine beaches, excellent shopping and amazing five-star resorts, this top Cebu destination is definitely worth a visit!

Bantayan Island

Bantayan Island

Located off the northwestern tip of Cebu Island, Bantayan is where tourists head if they’re in search of peace and quiet. The most low-key of all Cebu’s destinations, Bantayan is home to some amazing beaches, crystal clear diving, delicious restaurants and quaint village streets. Soak in the rays or bicycle/scooter your way around this quiet island town for an unforgettable experience.

Malapascua Island

Malapascua Island

Located off the northern coast of Cebu Island, Malapascua attracts many visitors with its pristine beaches, but its biggest draw is found underwater. Malapascua Island is home to some of the regions best diving locations, with Thresher sharks (amazing!), manta rays and other tropical marine life flooding the waters. Also home to some beautiful rock faces (great for cliff jumping), exotic beaches and delicious local eateries, this island should be on all tropical adventure seeker’s itineraries.

Camotes Islands

Camotes Islands

Located off the east coast of Cebu Island, this collection of 4 islets is one of the area’s most exciting destinations to visit. Filled with white sandy beaches, beautiful lakes, open caves and beautiful rock formations, this Cebu destination is perfect for the traveler who loves to explore. Walk, boat or bike around these virgin islets and enjoy the serenity of one of Cebu’s least visited getaways.

Olango Islands
Olango IslandsAnother group of islands off the east coast of Cebu (just off the coast of Mactan), Olango is an excellent destination for tourists who are interested in both nature and the outdoors. Home to some beautiful sandy beaches, rocky shorelines, coral reefs, mangroves and salt marshes, this area is most well known for its Wildlife Sanctuary. Right in the heart of the flight path for a great number of the world’s migratory birds, over 97 species make this destination a transitory home base. Also home to some excellent diving, land and water wildlife enthusiasts will truly love this Cebu island getaway.

The best time to visit Cebu and its neighboring islands

Most visitors are heading to Cebu and its neighboring islands for one thing: sun, sand and diving. Though the island enjoys a relatively temperate climate year round, extremes of heat, humidity and rain do exist. The most moderate time of year is from December to March, but if you love the heat and sun, visits can be extended all the way to May. It’s best to avoid June-August in the Cebu area, when monsoon rains and typhoons are common. If you’re looking to visit these top Cebu getaways or perhaps want to create your own itinerary, find the best local Cebu travel guides to help make your Philippine island getaway truly unique.
