Awaruku Reserve spans over 12 hectares of lush native forest. As you walk along the trail, your guide will point out the impressive Kauri trees, some of New Zealand’s oldest, and the native Nikau Palms that line the path. You'll learn that this area once hosted ancient Maori settlements, and the trees you see have stood for centuries, silently witnessing the region’s history.
As dusk settles, the atmosphere shifts, and the forest grows quieter.Your guide will lead you to a secluded spot known for its glowworm activity.Glowworms, or Arachnocampa luminosa, are the larvae of a gnat species that emit a soft, blue-green glow to attract prey. The guide will share fascinating details about the glowworms' lifecycle, explaining how they use bioluminescence to trap insects in sticky silk threads. The ethereal glow of these tiny creatures, suspended in the dark, creates a magical experience.
After some time spent marveling at the glowworms, the tour continues with a short walk to learn more about the conservation efforts that help protect Awaruku Reserve.Your guide will explain how the reserve is part of ongoing ecological restoration efforts, helping to preserve native plants and wildlife, including the New Zealand Kaka and Kereru. These species, along with the glowworms, rely on the health of the reserve’s ecosystem.
As you begin your walk back to the car park, the peaceful sounds of the night linger. The tour concludes with a brief reflection on the beauty and importance of the reserve, leaving you with a deeper appreciation for the natural world.
