Originally inhabited by the Caiquetio Indians, Bonaire Washington Park is the first nature sanctuary of the former Netherland Antilles.Established in 1969 and located in the Northwest part of the island, it covers an area roughly one fifth of Bonaire, and it had Slagbaai, the largest most productive plantations during the colonial period.
Today Bonaire Washington Slagbaai National Park is home to 2 internationally recognized and protected wetlands known as Ramsar sites. and a safe habitat for Bonaire’s native birds, and reptiles.Its pristine beaches are an important nesting ground for the sea turtles that visit the waters of our unspoiled island, Bonaire.
