  • Travel essentials: Passport, visa if required, flight tickets, and travel insurance documents.

Know before you go

  • Consult your doctor in advance for necessary vaccinations, carry a Yellow Fever certificate if required, and take precautions against malaria by using antimalarial medication, insect repellent with DEET, and long-sleeved clothing in the evenings.
  • Carry comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and evacuation from remote locations such as the Serengeti.
  • Always follow the instructions of your safari guide, avoid leaving the vehicle, getting too close to animals, or making loud noises, and respect the wild environment.
  • Most nationalities require a visa to enter Tanzania, which can be obtained online as an e-visa or on arrival, and ensure your passport is valid for at least six months beyond departure.
  • International arrivals connect through Kilimanjaro International Airport to a domestic flight into Seronera Airstrip in the Serengeti, and schedules may be subject to delays.
  • The local currency is Tanzanian Shilling, but US dollars are widely accepted, preferably clean, crisp bills printed after 2009, and small denominations are useful for tipping.
  • Tipping is customary, with safari guides usually receiving 10 to 20 USD per person per day, lodge staff 5 USD per guest per day via a communal box, and balloon crews tipped separately.
  • Credit cards are accepted at the Four Seasons Safari Lodge with a surcharge of 3 to 5 percent, so it is advisable to carry cash for tips and smaller purchases.
  • Domestic flights to the Serengeti have strict luggage limits of 15 kg or 33 lbs per person and require soft-sided bags.
  • The Serengeti has two main seasons: the dry season from June to October, which is cooler and ideal for wildlife viewing, and the wet season from November to May, which is lush and less crowded, so pack accordingly.
  • Bring a camera with a zoom lens, extra batteries, memory cards, a universal adapter, and a portable power bank to capture and preserve safari moments.
