The itinerary

1
Day 01

Welcome to Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve

  • Begin at 8:00 a.m. at the Meeting Point Restaurant in Lago Agrio.
  • Take private transport for about two hours to Tierras Orientales, on the banks of the Aguarico River, and enjoy a box lunch.
  • Start a 3-hour motorized canoe journey downstream to "La Bocana," the meeting point of the Aguarico and Cuyabeno rivers, spotting pink river dolphins and learning about the rainforest.
  • Continue 30 minutes upstream on the Cuyabeno River to reach the lodge inside the reserve, observing wildlife along the way.
  • Arrive, settle in, enjoy dinner, and join an optional night walk to discover nocturnal creatures.

Day 02

Parrot Clay Lick and Jungle Canoe Exploration

  • Begin at 5:30 a.m. with a motorized canoe ride upstream, about 1 hour, along the Cuyabeno River to observe birds and animals.
  • Arrive at the "Saladero," a clay lick where up to five species of colourful parrots gather, and have breakfast outdoors.
  • Switch to traditional killas de remo canoes to paddle into a blackwater meander, navigating slowly to search for flora and fauna.
  • Return to the Cuyabeno River and continue to the lodge, for a total of 4 hours.
  • After lunch and a rest, take part in a 3-hour jungle walk to learn about medicinal plants.
  • Return for dinner, with an optional night activity available.

Day 03

Kichwa Community Visit and Bird Observation Tower

  • Start with breakfast at 5:30 a.m. and navigate downstream in killas de remo canoes on the Cuyabeno River.
  • Visit blackwater lagoons and stop at "La Bocana" to watch freshwater dolphins.
  • Arrive at Doña Carmen Yumbo's Kichwa farm, harvest fruits, and prepare casabe, a cassava bread, for lunch.
  • Return to the lodge by motorized canoe for a short rest.
  • At 4:30 p.m., board killas de remo again to visit the Bird Observation Tower built around a giant Ceibo tree for panoramic views.
  • As night falls, embark on a caiman-spotting adventure before returning to the lodge for dinner.

Day 04

Upstream Canoe Journey to the Next Lodge

  • Begin early with a short trip in the forest or by canoe to observe birds and the waking forest.
  • Have breakfast at 8:00 a.m., pack your bags, and board a motorized canoe for a 4-hour journey upstream to the Amazon Lodge.
  • Spot plants and animals along the way with the help of the local driver.
  • Arrive around noon, have lunch, settle into your room, and relax in the afternoon.
  • After dinner at 7:30 p.m., attend the guide's briefing about the lodge and upcoming activities.

Day 05

Parrot Clay Lick and Jungle Immersion

  • Wake early to visit the saladero, where parrots and parakeets gather to feed.
  • Have breakfast outdoors while watching the wildlife display.
  • Navigate by paddle canoe into a blackwater stream, with chances to spot sloths, snakes, and exotic insects.
  • In the afternoon, join a guided jungle hike focused on medicinal plants and ancestral knowledge.
  • Return to the lodge for dinner and relax under the sounds of the Amazon.

Day 06

Rivers, Lagoons, and Nocturnal Wildlife

  • Begin with a sunrise paddle to observe birds and mammals.

  • At night, embark on a starlit canoe ride to spot caimans and nocturnal wildlife.
  • End the day immersed in the magic of the Amazon.

Day 07

Farewell to the Amazon

  • Rise early for an optional forest walk or canoe outing.
  • After breakfast, pack your bags and travel downstream by canoe to the Aguarico River.
  • Continue upstream to Tierras Orientales and transfer back to Lago Agrio, arriving around 1:00 p.m.
  • Say goodbye to the Amazon, carrying unforgettable memories of its colours, sounds, and wildlife.
