Day 01

Moshi to Big Tree Camp via Lemosho Gate

  • Pick up from your hotel in Moshi and transfer to Lemosho Gate for registration.
  • Begin trekking through undisturbed montane forest decorated with Black and White Colobus Monkeys.

  • Arrive at Big Tree Camp for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Elevation: 1,200m to 1,950m to 2,850m

  • Distance: 6 km / 4 miles

  • Hiking Time: 3 - 4 hours

  • Habitat: Montane Forest to Moorland and Heath Vegetation

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Campsite

  • Trek across a beautiful valley outside the Shira Caldera Rim at 3,600m.
  • Reach the Shira Caldera, a high-altitude desert formed after the collapse of an ancient peak.

  • Camp and overnight at Shira 1 Campsite.

  • Elevation: 3,500m to 3,800m

  • Distance: 7 km

  • Hiking Time: 5 - 6 hours

  • Habitat: Moorland and Rocky

Day 03

Across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp

  • Trek east across the Shira Plateau.
  • Visit Cathedral Peak at 3,850m for acclimatization and enjoy spectacular views of Mount Meru and Kibo Peak.

  • Continue to Shira 2 Camp for dinner and overnight.

  • Elevation: 3,500m to 3,800m

Shira 2 Camp to Barranco via Lava Tower

  • Descend to Barranco Campsite for dinner and overnight.

  • Elevation: 3,800m to 3,950m

  • Distance: 13 km

  • Hiking Time: 7 - 8 hours

Day 05

Barranco Wall Climb to Karanga Campsite

  • Begin the day by climbing the Barranco Wall to 4,200m for acclimatization.
  • Cross ridges and valleys to Karanga Campsite for a hot lunch.

  • Enjoy an afternoon acclimatization hike up the scree slopes towards the Southern Ice Field.

  • Return to camp for dinner and overnight.

  • Elevation: 3,950m to 3,900m

  • Distance: 6 km

  • Hiking Time: 4 - 5 hours

Day 06

Karanga Campsite to Barafu Ridge Camp

  • Trek to Barafu Ridge Campsite.
  • Walk across an alpine desert with strong, cold winds from Kibo Peak and its glaciers.

  • Have an early dinner at 17:00 hrs and rest until midnight for summit preparation.

  • Elevation: 3,900m to 4,620m

  • Distance: 8 km

  • Hiking Time: 3 - 4 hours

  • Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 07

Midnight Summit Push to Uhuru Peak and Descent to Mweka

  • Wake at midnight for a light breakfast and begin the summit ascent at 00:00 hrs.
  • Reach Stella Point at 5,861m between 04:00 - 05:00 hrs.

  • Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

  • Spend time taking photographs before descending to Barafu for lunch.

  • Continue descending through moorland and heath to Mweka Hut Campsite for dinner and overnight.

  • Elevation: 4,620m to 5,895m to 3,100m

  • Distance: 15 km

  • Hiking Time: 10 - 12 hours

  • Habitat: Desert and Ice

Day 08

Mweka Gate Descent and Return to Moshi

  • After breakfast, descend through montane forest to Mweka Gate.
  • Sign out and receive your climbing certificates.

  • Transfer back to your hotel in Moshi for a celebration.

  • Distance: 9 km

  • Hiking Time: 3 - 4 hours
