Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's biggest and oldest national park, situated just 30 km west of Anuradhapura and 26 km from Puttlam. The park remained closed from 1988 until 2003 due to the war. There are nearly 60 natural lakes (sand-rimmed water basins) spread across the park. Wilpattu is among the top national parks and is world-renowned for its leopard (Panthera Pardus Kotiya) population.
